March is the Month O' The Green.
No, not because of Leprechauns, shamrocks & all things Irish, but because---
I am going to keep much better track of all my green this month.
Green= you know, doh, duckets, dollars, moola, change
.....and the list goes on.
My goal for the month of March is to keep every, single, last to the drop
RECEIPT.
That's right - everything Tyler & I spend money on will be documented.
I always tell the Hub I'm going to do it, but never do.
Now's the time.
I want to know where all my early American President's faces are going.
Wouldn't it be cool, and maybe a bit alarming, to discover where we spend all our money?
I'll create an envelope tonight.
Anyone care to join me in this challenge?
Who's with me???

I am so totally surprised that this isn't already common practice around Casa de Atwood! Pat and I have been compulsive receipt savers since well before we met. It's really cool to see where all your money is going...AND there might be a few surprises. I'm always shocked that the amount of money I spend on clothes is not much more than Pat (thank goodness for suits!). Well, have fun and good luck with your March challenge. Do you guys use Quicken or Microsoft Money? You totally should if you don't already...it's very helpful.
we do use microsoft money. tyler said he has a general idea of what & where we spend money on, but for my own sake, i want to see where i spend it all the time.
as for the receipts, i've tried & tried to save them, but the clutter of them drives me bananas! so i'm going to be more neat about it this month.
I'm with Lindsay -- must be the accountant thing -- I know where every penny goes. And, if I can't figure it out, it gets taken out of my play money. It's my incentive. I keep all my receipts in my wallet and clean them out twice a month. Then, I keep the receipts for big things (clothes, electronics, etc.) in my filing cabinet. That way they are out of my wallet and still safe. Oh, and Eric rarely buys anything except gas, the rare lunch out, rare vending machine run, and the occasional grocery store trip -- honestly, that's it. Best of luck counting your pennies!
I'm in. My husband is great with the receipt thing, but I need to be a bit more diligent with it though! Usually I just wait for it to post online on our account and then write it into our budget sheet on excel. I think keeping receipts would help me be more accountable for all the little things I spend.
We don't keep receipts around here, we just keep track of everything on Kev's spreadsheet and on Mint.com I'm trying to keep my grocery receipts this month though... since that's where I spend the most $$
Also, just a fun resource for you since you're doing so much with finances is http://personalfinance.byu.edu
My dad and some other professors have worked on it. I'm working on taking the course. Always wanted to take a personal finance course and this one is free :)
